ColdFusion Performance Tuning: Slow Queries, Caching and Memory Leaks

Quick answer

Most slow ColdFusion apps are slowed by database queries, missing caching, JVM memory pressure or slow external calls, not the engine. Measure first with an APM like FusionReactor, then parameterize and index queries, cache stable data, fix memory leaks in shared scopes and put timeouts on every outbound call.

Where do ColdFusion performance problems usually come from?

In most slow ColdFusion apps, the engine is not the problem. The usual culprits, in rough order, are slow or repeated database queries, missing caching, memory pressure in the JVM, and blocking calls to slow external services.

How do you find the slow requests?

Measure before you change anything. A Java application monitor such as FusionReactor, or Adobe's Performance Monitoring Toolset, shows the slowest requests, the queries inside them and what the server was doing at the time. At minimum, turn on slow query logging in the database and review the ColdFusion logs for long-running requests and timeouts.

How do you speed up queries?

  • Use cfqueryparam or parameterized queryExecute everywhere, which also lets the database reuse execution plans.
  • Add indexes for the columns your slow queries filter and join on.
  • Remove queries inside loops; fetch what you need in one query instead.
  • Select only the columns you use, and page large result sets.

What should you cache?

  • Reference data that rarely changes, using query caching or the application scope.
  • Expensive computed results and API responses, with a sensible expiry.
  • Static assets, served by the web server or a CDN rather than ColdFusion.

How do you find memory leaks and tune the JVM?

Watch heap usage over days, not minutes. A heap that climbs steadily and never recovers after garbage collection points to a leak, often large objects stored in session or application scope, or caches with no limits. Set heap size to suit the server's memory, keep Java up to date, and restart less, not more, once the leak is fixed.

What about slow external services?

Set timeouts on every HTTP call, move slow work to background tasks or cfthread, and cache responses where the data allows it. One slow third-party API without a timeout can tie up every request thread.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my ColdFusion app slow?

Usually slow or repeated database queries, missing caching, JVM memory pressure or slow external API calls. An application monitor such as FusionReactor shows which one before you change anything.

Does cfqueryparam improve performance?

Often, yes. Parameterized queries let the database reuse execution plans, and they also prevent SQL injection, so they belong on every query value.
